Particularly as a UNESCO City of Media Arts, it’s important to ask not only what creativity does for us but also what we can do on behalf of creativity. In going about this, the city bears a major share of the responsibility for creating a fertile environment.
Sharing knowledge and the exchange of skills and experience among cities will gain importance in the future. This is why we have reason to be delighted that Linz is entitled to call itself a UNESCO City of Media Arts and thus join the ranks of this international network. But this title isn’t merely an ornament; above all, it’s a mandate. The city has been obliged—or, actually, commissioned—to continue to cultivate conditions in which creativity thrives, to foster and take advantage of international exchange, and to position within the network this generation and coming generations of creative men and women working in art and culture. These are great assignments!
